Ushpizin (2004) with English subtitles

In Jerusalem’s orthodox neighborhoods, it’s Succoth, seven days celebrating life’s essentials in a sukkot, a temporary shack of both deprivation and hospitality. A devout couple, Moshe and Mali, married nearly five years and childless, are broke and praying for a miracle. Suddenly, miracles abound: a friend finds Moshe a sukkot he says is abandoned, Moshe is the beneficiary of local charitable fundraising, and two escaped convicts arrive on Moshe and Mali’s doorstep in time to be their ushpizin – their guests. The miracles then become trials. Rabbinical advice, absolution, an effort to avoid anger, and a 1000-shekel citron figure in Moshe’s dark night of the soul.

The following is an excerpt from a work-in-progress (2012-) entitled ‘SIGNS, There will be blood and some will burn!’ written & illustrated by L.S. James.

..Was there ever a nation deconstructed, decimated, dispersed and then nearly two thousand years later, returned to their homeland as a re-established nation? Phenomenally yes, if only through a baptism of fire that the nation of Israel endured to win back her homeland some 2000 years later in the War of Independence in 1948. Jerusalem however remained elusive when it fell to Jordan. Only the 6-Day War can boast that for the first time in nearly 2000 years the Old City rested in Jewish hands. That day¾7th June 1967¾marked a glorious day for Israel that, despite the Church age, God had never lost grip of the apple of His eye (Zech 2:8).# This long journey home that promised purpose, pogroms and perseverance is all but the work of God seeded in covenants (Jer 16, Deut 30:1-5, Ezek 34, 36, 37). In one of the lowest points of their arduous journey, 5.8 million Jews including defenseless little children perished by the hand of Nazi Germany in World War II.# Romans 11:1 I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew..25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved.. Paul has labored to stress that national and spiritual Israel are not one and the same: for while the former remains unregenerate, the latter is not clueless to the mystery¾that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham (Galatians 3:7). Ethnic Israel can only grasp this truth when God removes her blindness but not until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

Israel today is a nation teeming with Jews having made aliyah (the return) from more than 25 different lands. Amazing yet is the fact that from the din of some 85 different languages the Hebrew tongue is heard! Jeremiah 31:23 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “Then shall again use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I bring back their captivity..’ Israel however secular shall bow to a prophecy that the Jews must first return to the Land before the Messiah returns with the outpouring of His Spirit. Hosea 6:1 Come, and let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. 2 After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His sight. 3 Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth. Jesus Himself indicated in the parable of the fig tree that a return of Jews to Jewish soil is a run up to His Advent (Luke 21: 29-30). Weep and wail or fast and pray, build a wall to keep terror at bay, peace shall nonetheless evade the Jew. But what a wonder should he repent and say ‘Baruch haba b’Shem Adonai’ or Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! (Ps 118:26) More than a prayer, it is the clarion call for the Prince of Peace to return to the Mount of Olives from where he ascended. Only then will Israel be restored and be filled with Messianic Jews. Romans 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved.
